Top 3 things I learnt about swiftwater rescue in New Zealand!

Last week I had the opportunity to join a group of highly trained New Zealand firefighters on an action-packed Rescue 3 New Zealand Swiftwater and Floodwater Rescue Technician (SRT) course! It was dynamic, challenging and packed with hot tips! Here’s my top 3 takeaways:

1. Know WHY you’re doing something. Understand the pros and cons and always have a reason.

2. Paddling is underrated. Choose low risk options first. Talk, Wade, PADDLE. Paddling on a tether is underrated. Avoid swimming, but keep it in the toolbox.

3. Floodwater reality check. Training is typically in a clean river environment. In reality, floodwater has many more hazards. Wading and paddling are usually going to be your go to.

And here’s a bonus tip. No smiling.

Blue steel.
